PROfessional GRowth through Education in the Sport Sector by pursuing a Dual Career

ProgressDC

Type: ERASMUS-LS
Period: 02 Feb 2025 - 01 Feb 2028

What is ProgressDC all about?

Succeeding in sport entails a great number of challenges, among which is to combine a sporting career with education and prepare for the job market. Professional athletes spend many hours training extensively and consume the greatest part of their life in their sporting career, often making big sacrifices at a very young age.

Progress DC focuses on professional athletes and works on 3 different levels. On the level of the sport organisation (or sport association), that through the project will will acquire a qualified career adviser (the DC Career Adviser). On the level of professional athletes, that will receive training (in a flexible form) on missing transversal skills for employment (including digital skills), as well as career advising and the possibility of job testing. On the level of all stakeholders and policy makers, through building awareness on the importance of dual careers for athletes.

The project works towards the inclusion of athletes in employment (and thus in society) after their career as athletes is completed (therefore inclusion in the field of Sports). Additionally, it works towards the development of the digital skills of both the people in the sports organisations that will become DC Advisers, as well as the athletes, since all training and mentoring sessions are conducted through the use of digital classrooms (and of course athletes will also receive training on digital skills). The project promotes education in sport, as it takes into consideration the skills developed through sports as well as the missing skills for employment, while it develops those missing skills and it encourages and supports athletes' dual careers. Additionally, the project promotes the quality of coaching and other advisory services provided by the staff of sports organisations through the development of a new qualification and the training and assessment of the above-mentioned staff, so they become certified (with ISO17024 certification) as DC Advisers. Therefore, the project does not only works at the level of the athlete, but also at the level of the career adviser, that is a person in a key position in the organisation that will support the athletes to develop a dual career.

OBJECTIVES

Objectives of the project are the following:

  1. To identify the life-span transversal skills, transversal skills, necessary for the future employment of athletes in a flexible and digital way, thus supporting skills development and employability.
  2. To develop the qualification of DC Career Adviser and to train, assess and qualify coaching and other staff (e.g., managers, human resources staff etc.) of sports clubs to become DC Career Advisor.
  3. To profile possible careers that professional athletes may follow, and through this to provide DC Advisers with valuable information for consulting of athletes (and more specifically athletes).
  4. To develop life-span transversal skills, necessary for employment (including digital skills) of athletes in a flexible and digital way, thus supporting skills development and employability. One curriculum and one set of training materials on missing employment skills will be developed. 60 athletes will be trained and assessed on that set of skills (baseline), while the consortium targets to train and assess 70 athletes in total.
  5. To provide dual career advice (mentoring and coaching) through the DC Career Advisers and the VET providers to athletes.
  6. To develop a one-stop-shop, the DC Platform, from where interested stakeholders will find all best practices identified for dual career (those related to skills development and advice as well as other best practices), coaches and staff of sports organisations will be able to receive the training and get the certification as DC Advisers and athletes will receive training and assessment on their missing transversal skills for employment.
  7. To sensitize on the importance of dual career for athletes in general. These presentations will target other sports organisations and associations as well as policy makers.
